Porch Talk With Kassie Jones

This month The Bird and the Bee sat down with our client whom quickly turned into a friend, Kassie, to discuss her “modern farmhouse” and how her dream became a reality.

Kassie's Home After

Before retiring, Kassie worked in the fashion, home decor and banking industries. While living in different cities and travelling for work, she would collect ideas for her dream home. In 2015, she retired and settled in Atlanta. She wanted to be close to her sister Jayne, so deciding where to live was easy. She just needed to find the perfect lot or home to renovate. In 2016, she received a call from Jayne that a house came on the market that was in walking distance from her house in Marietta. Kassie bought the house sight unseen! She quickly  rolled up her sleeves, and got to work designing her dream home.

Kassie would drive past The Bird and The Bee for months until finally “one of my friends asked me to go to lunch in Smyrna, and I said yes, as long as we could go into this cute boutique in Smyrna I always drive past.” Kassie says, “the second time I went to the shop with my sister Jayne, I met Betsy, where we talked to her about coming over to discuss plans for some major projects. And that is how it all began….”

Kassie and Betsy

Kassie and Jayne ended up taking the Chalk Paint® Essentials class with a friend to celebrate their birthday. At the time of the class, Kassie was working on the design of her kitchen, but had been overwhelmed  because of the price of the finish she wanted. Kassie and I talked about this in the class and I was happy to share some ideas from a custom color I was working on for another customer. Once Kassie realized I could create exactly what she wanted, she asked the contractor if she could outsource painting the kitchen cabinets to a local shop. Kassie brought me a sample door from the manufacturer Wood-mode she wanted to imitate, and I began creating colors and techniques for her. This was definitely a new challenge for me and I do like a good challenge!

I originally created the finish in lacquer, but I hated working with it! I wanted to use Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan. But even with the Chalk Paint®, and days of trying, I still did not like the finish. I even told Kassie and Jayne that I was  “not the girl for them.” It was the breakup conversation we’ve all had at least once in our lives; it’s not you, it’s me…. but Kassie and Jayne would not have it, and with their loving words, I put on my big girl pants and figured it out! I have to say, it’s legit. And it’s exactly what Kassie wanted.

After the kitchen, Kassie hired The Bird and the Bee for more projects (photographed below) including:  updating mirrors to match bathroom decor, custom barn doors in both her kitchen and bathroom, comfortable porch decor, and more! I was able to use a new technique on the guest bath mirror; using a blue foil to certain areas added a little bling to this ordinary mirror. I also used the classics such as French Linen, Duck Egg, Coco, Old Ochre, and my all time fav Country Grey.   Overall the projects were completely custom to match Kassie’s “Modern Farmhouse.”

To me and Kassie, this felt more like fun than a project. Though it is bittersweet to be finished, we are so thrilled that Kassie loves her new home and we thank her for allowing us to share these beautiful pictures with you!
